Volleyball, basketball, soccer and other sport competition with Cuban high schools

Edu Tours to Cuba.com is organizing sport exchange trips between high schools in Canada and Cuba. All the main sports are possible: basketball, volleyball, soccer, Olympic handball, etc. We match Canadian high schools with Cuban high schools. In many cases we can actually twin the players for each team and the paired students and coaches can thus communicate by email before they even meet in competition in Cuba! The programs and itineraries also can include cultural visits, activities and events. These Canada Cuba sport and cultural exchanges constitute an important trend for youth and student travel.

The games and practices are at the University ISCF (Instituto Superior de Cultura Fisica) Manuel Fajardo in the sport stadium Mariposa from which you can see pictures bellow:

The schools chosen for the twinning are specialized high schools in Cuba dedicated to a combined sport and regular school program which elevates the competition level. Bellow you have a photo gallery of the 2 teams who have participated in this program and the article published in the Canada Volleyball magazine (summer issue) with comments by the team leader, NL head coach, NL assistant coach and the manager of the Female Canada Games Team (NLVA). Following the picture gallery you will find an example program.

Cuba's view on its own sport achievements (the translation to English is done by the Cubans):

"Cuba is a major figure within the world of sports. It holds leading positions in events such as boxing, baseball and volleyball and its role has been enhanced by figures of international fame in athletics, fencing, judo, Greek wrestling, chess and weight-lifting. Every year the country hosts international sporting events.
Every year, Cuba holds the School Sports Games, a competition for students. The best athletes between the ages of 11 and 16 are invited to be tested for the Schools for Sports Initiation (EIDE). EIDE students attend regular classes, receive advanced coaching and take part in higher-level competitions. The top graduates from this school enter one of several Schools of Higher Athletic Performance (ESPA).
The two best performances are called to the Superior Schools for the Formation of High Performance Athletes (ESFAAR); these are the "Giraldo Cordova Cardin", "Marcelo Salado" and the "Cerro Pelado." All of them are located in the Cuban capital -where thousand of youngsters and eldest people - say the sport people of the so called Cuba's teams are, the ones having the mission of defending the three color flag in international events.
Prestige and push exhibited by the sport movement in the island had its very origin right from January the first, 1959, after the triumph of the revolution when this activity turned to be a people's right.
Just after that, the creation of new facilities began, sport devices were handed over throughout the whole island and new sport events were being held, these are among many other, important measures that led to the first jump of the Cuban sport
The decisive support of the Revolutionary Government, eased the creation of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, this took place in February 23, 1961. This institute's primary goal was to join great crowds of people to practice physical education, sports and healthy recreation and at the same time to raise the competition level of the islands' athletes in the international arena.
Those were the times when Voluntary Sportive Councils (CVD) showed up, it meant an outstanding stimulation for the Cuban sport. These Sportive Councils were formed by voluntary people who later turned out to be teachers within working centers, schools, universities, cooperatives and so on and so forth, they were hoisting the slogan of the multiple use of resources, also the celebration of the School Games, tests of Physical Efficiency known as: "Ready to Win" (Spanish acronym LPV), the mountain plans, the regime of sportive license for high performance, the avoidance of professionalism and the introduction of science and techniques advances.
Thanks to this precedence and the restless work of the great muscle family throughout more than four decades, Cuba owns a solid infrastructure on this branch. We feel ourselves proud of being able to count with our own sportive industry, center of medicine of first level and a modern anti doping lab among other key facilities for the success of this activity.
Every person in our country has the possibility of exercising his muscles without an age distinction. Children, teenagers, grandparents, physical or mentally disable people have the opportunity of giving health to their lives with programs encouraged by the government and the highest sport authorities in the island.
This is how a great per cent of athletes forming part of the national teams come from this high performance pyramid; however some might reach a start position without previously registering these sportive initiation schools, since systematic practice in Cuba has reached the farthest of places.
Our country has at the same time the privilege of counting with Superior Institutes of Physical Culture that are a great source of technicians and the International School of Physical and Sport Culture, by means of which Cuba offers its friendly hand to other nations.
That is why Cuba stands today as a sport power. Its results within the international arena confirm this statement. It has not been a random situation the fourth place we reached at Moscow Olympiad in 1980, fifth in Barcelona in 1992, we got the 8th position in Atlanta in 1996, ninth position in Sydney in 2000 and we are looking forward for a respectable place in Athens year 2004, just to quote the major sport event of the planet."
