MBAD705 "Global Business Study Tour 2005: CUBA" is a 3 credit, SPRING International Business Elective. This course is experiential with visits to cultural sites, joint ventures, a cigar factory, a sugar plantation, a Cuban university, meeting Cuban business students, government ministries concerned with attracting international trade and business, a Cuban law collective, meeting with lawyers and law students, etc. The lectures and site visits are designed to be interactive with our hosts. This course fulfills your international business requirement and counts towards a concentration in global business.

ITINERARY AND ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Day 1, Sunday, January 9

1:30 P.M. - Reception at airport Jose Marti, Havana, by Cuban bilingual guide who will be with the group during the entire stay, and a representative of our Cuban partners.

Transfer-in, welcoming cocktail and lunch on roof garden restaurant at Ambos Mundos, with view of Old Havana.

Day 2, Monday, January 10

9 A.M. - Full day city tour of Miramar, Modern and old Havana, including a cigar factory.

Lunch in Mercurio Restaurant in Old Havana.

Full tour of Old Havana, conversation with the City Historian on the relationship of the restoration of old Havana to the tourism business.

6 P.M. - Visit to Cabana/Morro, a fortress over-looking Havana, theme of colonial history. Dinner at 12 Apostoles Restaurant.

9 P.M. Cannon shot ceremony.

Day 3, Tuesday, January 11

9 A.M. - Conference by the Ministry of Foreign Trade (MINCEX) at Hotel Habana Libre. Cuba's trade with the world and in his context American-Cuban trade: current situation and prospects for the future.

1 P.M. - Lunch at Habana Libre Hotel restaurant Polinesio with the representative of MINCEX in order to carry on informal discussion.

3 P.M. - Joint venture - the case study of Sol Melia Spanish hotel chain with Cuban counter part in Habana Libre.

Walking tour of down-town business center, Vedado.

Dinner El Conejito.

Day 4, Wednesday, January 12

8:30 A.M. - CUJAE University dealing with Business Administration. Conference by Professor Fernando Portuondo Pichardo. Conference on Business Administration Studies in Cuba and the Economy in Cuba.

Followed by a free-welling discussion on the Cuban economy, present and future.

Informal talk with Cuban students in business administration.

Visit to computer classes at the CUJAE University.

1:30 P.M. - Lunch. El Ajibe

3 P.M. - Visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX). Talk on USA - Cuba relations followed by a question and answer period.

5:30 P.M. - Return to the hotel

7 P.M. - Walk to dinner with guide at El Oriente café in old Havana.

Day 5, Thursday, January 13

8:30 AM. - Two Conferences in Hotel Ambos Mundos.

A) 8:30.A.M. - Lecture in English by Dr. Jesus Pastor Garcia Brigos:
    Solving practical economic problems in contemporary Cuba.

    His lecture will be based on four cases in which he was directly involved:

    a) The problem of low production efficiency, worker absenteeism and stability at the Hershey Sugar Plant, 2000.

    b) The 1993/1994 crisis following the dismemberment of the USSR and the rupture of relations with Cuba. How to confront the economic crisis on the national level. 1993/1994

    c) The problem of competition and efficiency in state-run enterprises, 2001

    d) The transformation in part of Agricultural State farms to cooperatives and a small private decentralized rural sector, 1993.

    The presentation will be followed by an open question and answer period.

    10:30 A.M. - Coffee break

B) 10:45 A.M. - Lecture by Dr. Luis Barreiro Pousa, one of Cuba`s foremost experts on marketing.

Lecture, main Topic and sub themes:
Socialism and Marketing.
Marketing in Cuba, trend or necessity?
Marketing and the process of improving enterprises.
Cuba: Principles and experience in marketing for industry, services and society.
Limitations of marketing in Cuba.

1 P.M. - Lunch with both Cuban lecturers in order to continue the informal chat.

7: 30 P.M. - Baseball game

Day 6, Friday, January 14

9 A.M. - Visit and chat at Cuban law collective: Organización nacional de bufetes colectivos.

Lunch

2 P.M. - Meet with lawyers and law students: Chat on law system with Union de Juristas de Cuba.

5 P.M. - Return to hotel

Day 7, Saturday, January 15

8:00 A.M. - Departure for Trinidad.

Noon - Arrival at Hotel Ancon Gran Caribe. All included hotel on Ancon Beach.

Check-in at hotel.

7 P.M. - Dinner.

7:30 P.M. - Visit Trinidad by night, followed by Casa de la Trova, Cuban traditional music.

Description of hotel Horizontes Costasur:
131 air-conditioned rooms with private bathroom, satellite TV. A restaurant with buffet service and one specialized in Italian specialties. Four bars, a nightclub, swimming pool, medical assistance, shop, games room, safety deposit box, currency exchange, rental of aquatic bicycles and snorkeling equipment, kayaking and tourism office.

Day 8, Sunday, January 16

9.A.M. - Visit Trinidad, tour of Trinidad and the nearby FNTA sugar plant.

2 P.M. - Lunch in hotel

Exchange with local people.

Day 9, Monday, January 17

8: 30 A.M. - Return to Havana via Cienfuegos. City Tour of Cienfuegos with lunch at Casa de la Valle.

4 P.M. - check in at hotel Ambos Mundos.

Exchange with local people.

Day 10, Tuesday January 18

A.M. - Exchange with local people.

Departure at 11:30 A.M for airport. Flight leaves at 2:30 P.M.
