Cuba Tour 2004

This exclusive two-week program by EduToursToCuba.com for Saint Mary's College of California gives college university students a great exposure to Cuban history, culture, arts, music, education, Afro Cuban religion and culture, health care and ecology through visits, lectures, chats and exchanges with the Cuban people and students. The program offers a full day tour to Matanzas where you will have the opportunity to learn and exchange on Afro Cuban religion and culture and a two-day field trip to Las Terrazas and Viñales in the province of Pinar del Río to observe the Cuban countryside and learn about the new trends in agriculture and environmental protection.

Day 1, Friday, January 16

Arrival at airport in Havana at 7:55 P.M.

Meet and greet at airport by Cuban Celimar/Havanatur representative Leisyt Guerrero, the Cuban Celimar/Havanatur guide who will be with the group throughout the program, Maria Victoria Prince and Arnold August of EduToursToCuba.com.

Transfer and check in at Hotel Vedado.

Day 2, Saturday, January 17

8:30 A. M. Information meeting after breakfast with Celimar/Havanatur representative Leisyt Guerrero, the Cuban guide who will be with the group through the program, Maria Victoria Prince and Arnold August of EduToursToCuba.com

9 A.M. Full day city tour, Modern and old Havana with lunch at El Patio Restaurant in Old Havana Dinner at Hotel

7:30 P.M. Walking tour of Vedado area with guide to get to know the night spots for cultural activities, places for snacks, etc

Saturday night - Cultural Show at Teatro Nacional or Grand Teatro, depending on the cultural calendar (TBA at the information meeting)

Day 3, Sunday, January 18

Noon - Lunch in Central Havana

2 P.M. Afro Cuba religion and culture, music: Callejon de Hamel

Old Havana in the evening, on foot.

Dinner and show in Old Havana: Casa de la Musica, Cuban culture

Day 4, Monday, January 19

8:30 A.M. University of Havana, on the historic steps, a chat with Arnold August on Democracy and Elections in Cuba: looking at the issue from an historical perspective.

9:30 A.M. Transfer and lecture at the Pedagogical University Enrique Jose Varona linked to the University of Havana: 19 and 20th century Cuban History.

Lunch at El Torre.

P.M. - Visit to the Museo de la Ciudad and the Museo de la Revolucion: 19th and 20th century history.

Evening: Visit to Morro/Cabana historical complex, theme of colonial history
Dinner at Doce Apostoles Restaurant at Morro/Cabana, evening view of Havana.

9 P.M. Cannon ceremony.

9:30 P.M. Return to the hotel

Day 5, Tuesday, January 20

8:30 A.M. Meet with students from the University of Havana.

9:30 AM. Transfer and lecture at the Pedagogical University Enrique Jose Varona linked to the University of Havana: Cuban Culture

Lunch at Restaurant Barraca, Hotel Nacional

P.M. Visit to the Museo de Bella Artes in Old Havana, new museum of fine arts
Dinner at hotel.

Day 6, Wednesday, January 21

9 A.M. - Visit to Regla - theme of Afro Cuban religions

Lunch at Restaurant Polinesio, Habana Libre

P.M. - Centro Yoruba - theme of Afro Cuban religions
Dinner in Old Havana - La Mina, listening to Cuban popular music

Day 7, Thursday, January 22

8:30 A.M. Full day tour to Matanzas, on the issue of Afro Cuban music and culture, exchange with Cubans involved in the tradition

Lunch at Albacora in Varadero, place to change into swim suits.

P.M. - Free time for beach
Dinner at the Cuevas de Bellamar restaurant in Varadero

Return to Havana.

Day 8, Friday, January 23

9 A.M. - Visit to local community - on theme of Women in Cuba, meeting with the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC).

P.M. - Lunch at El Ajibe with invited 2 invited Cuban guests from FMC in order to continue the chat.

Day 9, Saturday, January 24

8:30 A.M. Early morning departure from Havana for Pinar del Rio

Las Terrazas, theme of UNESCO-declared biosphere reserve, preservation of the environment.

Lunch in Las Terrazas, farmer`s house.

Swim in river.

Visit to Soroa, dip in falls and a visit to the orchid garden

Transfer to Hotel Soroa, check-in

Dinner at Hotel

Day 10, Sunday, January 25

9 A.M. Departure to Hotel La Ermita, check-in.

Visit to Vinales in Pinar del Rio: History: native Indian caves and mural history.

Tobacco plantations,

Visit to Casa del Curado de Ancon, theme of agrarian reform

Day 11, Monday, January 26

8: 30 A.M. Transfer to Havana and visit to the

Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) - (theme of Fine Arts Education in Cuba

Lunch at the ISA.

Theme of Education in Cuba: Visit to a high school and the Museo de Alfabetizacion (Literacy campaign) in Ciudad Libertad (dedicated to education education)

Theme of Health Care in Cuba: A clinic: ORTOP (Centro de atencion para los padeciminientos ortopedicos)

Check-in at Hotel Vedado.

Day 12, Tuesday, January 27

9 A.M. Theme of Hemingway. All day tour, visiting his house converted into a Museum, (the Finca), Ambos Mundos Hotel in Old Havana (his room where we lived and wrote for many years.) Have a Daiquiri at the Floradita bar in Old Havana, Hemingway`s favorite Daiquiri bar.

Lunch in Bodeguita del Medio, another Hemingway haunt in Old Havana, famous for its Mojitos, a Hemingway favourite.

Transfer to Cojimar, small fishing village and port, east of Havana, and which inspired Hemingway to write the novel The Old man and the Sea.

Dinner at Las Terrazas Restaurant, Cojimar, a Hemingway restaurant/museum.

Return to hotel.

Day 13, Wednesday, January 28

9 A.M - Theme of economy. Rum Museum in Old Havana, guided tour on sugar cane, its origins, history and dev development.

Lunch in old Havana. La Mina.

P.M. Chat and visit on joint ventures in Cuba.

Visit to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX), chat on the history and current situation in USA- Cuba relations.

Dinner at Hotel

Day 14, Thursday, January 29

9 A.M. Exchange with Cuban people.

Evening: farewell dinner at Restaurante Barraca, in Hotel Nacional, with Cuban guides and driver.

Day 15, Friday, January 30

AM - Exchange with Cuban people.

Lunch at Hotel

5 P.M. Transfer to Airport:

8:55 P.M. - Departure for Los Angeles
